How many types of door locks are there?

We have 5 different types of door locks namely:

  1. Padlocks, which are mainly used for lockers, drawers, and trash units
  2. Cam locks, which are used for cabinets, drawers, mailboxes.
  3. Knob locks, which are used for interior doors.
  4. Deadbolts, which are used for exterior doors.
  5. Mortise Locks, which are used for commercial doors, entry glass doors, and apartment doors.

There are many more other door locks that fall within the five categories of knobs, deadbolts, cam locks, knob locks, deadbolts, and mortise locks. An example of that is the lever handle door locks which are used for interior doors and work like knob locks.

How to change a door lock on exterior doors?

We’ve previously discussed how to pick a door lock. But now, changing a door lock is another thing. Homeowners will want to change their front door locks as well. This is an easy task for those who know what they’re doing. This can be done in under an hour, and can be accomplished by following these steps:

Step 1: Remove the old door lock

After purchasing a new set of door locks, remove the old one by unscrewing both exterior doorknobs and removing all screws from inside. Be sure not to leave your front entrance vulnerable for long! After removing the doorknobs and loosening them, use a screwdriver to remove nails/screws at the side edges of your front entrance.

Step 2: Install the new lock

First, grab the new latch piece and insert it into one of its two holes alongside the edge of your door. Make sure that you’re inserting it correctly by looking at where both edges meet up with each other as well as checking to see if the tapered end faces outward from a closed position (away from hinges).

Then, adjust the latch in place so that it’s centered on an exposed hole of the door.

Fit the new doorknobs on your door and connect them with a latch. Use nails or screws that come in this kit for easy installation!

Then tighten the screws so that all parts are flush against the door surface. The remaining nails or screws will be used to attach a new strike plate if it hasn’t already been attached when replacing old ones with this technique in the mind-the frame of your front entrance must also have room for installation, but don’t worry; you can always remove an existing one later instead!

Step 3: Test the new lock

Make sure you’ve installed your strike plate securely and adjusted the latch to meet up with it before testing. Try opening from both sides of the home, as well as try unlocking or locking yourself if possible! You should feel confident knowing that these locks will keep out unwanted guests while still allowing passage for friends who are welcome inside.

Finally, the old keys should be discarded in order to prevent confusion. Get duplicates of your new key if needed. A good thing would be getting door lock kits that include spare keys.
